Adding the word ‘digestive’ to its name making it sound like a very healthy food to eat, but is it true? Looking at the primary ingredient which is wholemeal wheat flour, it does look healthy. However, they are biscuits first and foremost. We’re sure you know how these things are made. They’re usually baked and contain more than just wheat flour.

Other ingredients needed to make biscuits include vegetable oil, butter, margarine, sugar, milk powder, etc. As you can see, some of these ingredients are high in fat, which eventually increase the calories of these biscuits. The point of dieting is to watch calorie intake. Eating some digestive biscuits may be equal to having a medium-sized meal. In other words, they wouldn’t be helpful if you want to lose weight. Remember that digestive biscuits taste wonderful, so it’s hard to stop after swallowing 2 or 3.

Dietary fiber aside, digestive biscuits aren’t that much different from other baked goods. Sure, they could be made from healthier types of flour, but sugar and fat will always be added. Otherwise, they wouldn’t look and taste like biscuits. The sugar content is high because it’s required to offset the plain taste of flour. Flour is already packed with carbs, now with extra sugar this combination will be highly inflammatory to the body. Trans fats may also be included in the making process.

Trans fats are nothing but empty calories since body won’t benefit in any way from them. Trans fats will only increase your chance of developing cardiovascular disease in the long run. Last but not least, sodium is also added to add richness to the flavor. Even sweet treats like biscuits will feel incomplete without some sodium in them. Too much sodium circulating in the body can lead to high blood pressure, which is a major cause of life-threatening diseases including heart disease, stroke, and kidney damage.

Are they good for weight loss?

Digestive biscuits are like any other biscuits. If the others are beneficial for weight loss, then this type should be, too. But unfortunately, the answer is no, digestive biscuits aren’t good for weight loss. If you want to amp up dietary fiber intake, why not choose oatmeal, instead? After all, the only essential component in these biscuits which matters for weight loss is the whole wheat flour. The rest should be consumed in moderation.
